This colorized photograph contains a scene from Abuja, Nigeria as stated in the title. The photo is a medium shot of a still-life that features two main subjects. The subjects only fill the right half of the image leaving the left half open. The background of the image is very pale and contrasts nicely with the bright and popping colors of the clothing on the monkeys. The chains connected to each of the subjects work perfectly as leading lines forcing your eyes trace it up to nothing but the edge of the image. Everything beyond and behind the monkeys is out of focus. The lighting is dull, but adds a softness to the whole image.
Immediately, my eyes are drawn to the chains because they add the most context to this image. While on light inspection, someone could say this is just a fun image of two monkeys in clothes, but once you look closer into it, the image becomes much sadder and depressing. The chains connected to the monkeys make me think that they are prisoners to someone with much higher power. Even the jerseys they wear almost resemble prison uniforms due to the matching colors of the pants and shirt. I think this image resembles to prisoners sharing a moment of compassion in their eternal struggle. |
